| Nov. 10th, 2004 10:39 pm hw Virginia, a poetic state abundantly filled with mountain ranges, winding rivers, and a scenery which changes divinely with the coming of each new season. Virginia, besides it physical looks, consists of wonderful leaders and citizens. One leader, John Wiliam Warner, a senator for 25 years has helped shape Virginia into what it is today.John Warner distinguished his career path as a public servant, both in the military and with the us attorneys before being elected to the senate. During a long and commendable career as a senator John Warner was and remains apart of many important votes on capitol hill and committees that focuse on the state's affiars. John Warner's strength and determination escalated his career into public office, aided with his accomplishments for Virginia, and affected his views on life.
On Febuary 18, 1927 today's known senator John William Warner came into the world. John Warner was born in Washington D.C. to parents, John and Martha Warner. The Warners settled in Washington D.C. so that father, John Warner, could work in obstetrics in the large hospitals in the area. The young John Warner found intrest in his father's experiences of being a surgeon during war, in France, and often had long conversations about what his father went through. John thought highly of his father and he stated,"My father dedicated his life to relieving human suffering, and his own ailments showed that war had a lasting impact." After the war John's father suffered from a loss of some hearing ability and his lungs were damaged due to the gases which were present in the war atmosphere. As a teenager, John spent time working on farms that one of his father's patient owned in Virginia.(http://www.militaryupdate.com/role_of_a_lifetime.htm) I believe during this time John learned how to become a better person; learning from his example, his father, that you should want to help others in need and doing so would add meaning to your life.
At the age of 17 John volunteered to serve in World War II (http://www.militaryupdate.com/role_of_a_lifetime.htm) The actions of volunteering were not done by someone who did not want to stand up for his country. The act of volunteering shows that John was dedicated to his country and wanted to do all he could to keep it from being destroyed by the actions of other countries. In January 1945, John was weeks from being 18 years old and had just joined the Navy. John said,"All the guys in my neighborhood did the same thing, there was no heroism in joining." (http://www.militaryupdate.com/role_of_a_lifetime.htm) While the end of his training in electronics came he was assigned a task aboard a ship that would be invading Japan. Durining this time the war had come to an end; discharging John in july 1946.(http://www.militaryupdate.com/role_of_a_lifetime.htm) At discharge John ranked as a third class petty officer, electronic technician's mate.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm) John's father died about a month after John's discharge due to cancer.(http://www.militaryupdate.com/role_of_a_lifetime.htm) John's father, to whom I believe, was an important person to John and who had instilled many good qualities that maked John who he is tody
As a youth John attended school in both Washington D.C. and Virginia. Due to his discharge at the age of 19, John went to Washington and Lee.(http://www.militaryupdate.com/role_of_a_lifetime.htm) John used his GI Benifits(tuition assistance and educational discounts for military personnel) towards the University. Washington and Lee was the alma mater of John's father who had graduated in 1903.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm) John attended the University of Virginia law school after earning his degree in engineering which took him three years at Washington and Lee.(http://www.militaryupdate.com/role_of_a_lifetime.htm) In 1950, during John's schooling at the University of Virginia he went into the military for the second time throught the Marine Corps.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm) He remained in the Marine Corps Reserve for ten years and rank as a captian.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm)John returned and became law clerk to Chief Judge E. Barrett Prettyman of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 1953.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm) In 1956, John served 4 years, as an assistant U.S. attorney, in the trial and appellate divisions.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm) Finally in 1960, John entered private law pratice.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm)
1978, the first year that John Warner was a senator. John came into the senate seat by being appionted to it by the Governor.(http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=W000154) William Scoot resigned from the office which left a vacancy that inturn need to be filled and the Governor believes John was the pefect man.(http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=W000154) While in the senate, John Warner was apart of numerous committees. John is apart of the Environment and Public Works Committee, Committee on Health, Education,Labor, and Pensions (H.E.L.P. committee), as well asthe Committee on Itelligence.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm) As chairman of the Armed Services Committee, John appreciates the oppertunity he has to work for the men and women of the Armed Forces.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm) The Committee of Armed Forces is a committe in which John as been apart of during his entire senatery.(http:www.senate.gov/~warner/about/aboutthesenatot.htm) John Warner's views on life and his views for the state have done a collection of good things for the state of Virginia. One main concern that John speaks high of is that of the tobacco work in the state. Jonh feels that the tobacco company work, which supllies many Virginians with jobs, is an important and benifical thing to the people of Virginia(http://warner.senate.gov/legislation/agriculture.tobacco.htm). The tobacco company employs more than 12,800 Virginians and more than 150,000 jobs that are not linked directly with the tobacco company are accommodated by the company.(http://warner.senate.gov/legislation/agriculture.tobacco.htm) John believes that before and harsh decisions are made, that every aspect of the tobacco company should be looked at.(http://warner.senate.gov/legislation/agriculture.tobacco.htm) "Tobacco farming has been an integral part of Virginia's economy for hundreds of years, and I am committed to keeping that tradition alive. In the 108th congress, I will continue to work actively on behalf of Virginia's tobacco farmers and communities to maintain this way of life." (http://warner.senate.gov/legislation/agriculture.tobacco.htm) Due to the fact the John ingaged himself so greatly into the tobacco issue, it shows he will work hard to get the best possible outcome to what he believes in.
The accomplishments in which John was done for the state are countless. John has done numerous acts for each region of the state that have improved each regions potenial. For the Hampton Roads region, John has obtained $1 million for The Center for the Arts at Christopher Newport University.(http://warner.senate.gov/accomplishments/hamptonroads.htm) For the Southside region, water infrastructure improvement for Lynchburg city has been given $15.9 million.(http://warner.senate.gov/accomplishments/southside.htm) In the Southwes region, John Warner gave $1.6 million to Virginia Tech for advanced technolgy research.(http://warner.senate.gov/accomplishments/southwest.htm). In the Shenandoah Valley region the Page County juvenile crime prevention program has been given $250,000.(http://warner.senate.gov/accomplishments/shenandoah.htm) Another accomplishment John Warner has done for the state is, for the Central Virginia region, improvements at Jamestown on the transportation has been given $2 million.(http://warner.senate.gov/accomplishments/central)The Norther Virginia region has been given $17.7 million towards improvments on the Nothern roads.(http://warner.senate.gov/accomplishments/nothern.htm) Finally for the Chesapeake Bay Area region, John has been able to supply $3.5million for th Hebert H. Bateman Environmental Education and Administrative Centers..(http://warner.senate.gov/accomplishments/chesapeakebay.htm) These were just one accomplishment for each region from a list of hunders or thousands throughout John Warner's career as a senator for Virginia.
